Umuagu-Ibeku residents lament disconnection from neighbouring communities
Disturbed by the ravaging effect of gully erosion in the community, the residents of Umuagu have raised the alarm of an impending disaster from rampaging gully erosion.
The most affected area is at Emede-Umuagu Ibeku behind Chidiebere Transport Terminal, Umuahia North Council Area, where houses and farmland have been destroyed.
A resident of the community, Mr. Mbanu Ibeawuchi Chukwunomso, lamented that many houses have already been destroyed by the menace, saying that many others are on the verge of being caved into the rampaging gully erosion threatening the entire area.
He pointed out that the residents in their efforts have carried out remedial works to manage the situation, but those measures had not been effective as the land keeps caving in with the attendant destruction of properties.
He disclosed that in the years past, the residents had written an SOS letter to the NEWMAP and Ministry of Environment, which has yielded no result, as they only visited to see the affected place with a promise to come to tackle the situation, which they never did.
Mr. Mbanu passionately called on Governor Alex Otti to come to the aid of the residents to address the menace.
