Another South American interested in playing for Bafana Bafana
Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro has expressed his desire to play for Bafana Bafana.
The 26-year-old Brazilian-born attacker has made his mark in South African football since making his Betway Premiership last season. He has scored 16 goals in 37 appearances for Masandawana making him one of their most influential players.
Upon acquiring South African citizenship in the coming years, Ribeiro may become eligible to play for South Africa. The Sundowns forward has not represented his country but is open to playing for Bafana.
“Unfortunately, I haven’t received an offer to represent Bafana, but it will be a pleasure to represent them because the national team is doing well,” Ribeiro said as per FARPost.
“So that’s the highest level for any footballer to be there, and also because Bafana has many Sundowns players, so if that opportunity presents itself, it will be great.”
Sundowns forward Ribeiro keen to play for Bafana
“I think I can be able to adapt and assist the national team because that’s the highest level that every player is dreaming about. If the offer comes I anticipate the response will be positive than negative.”
Mamelodi Sundowns have plenty of players in the Bafana squad and it would be interesting to see if Ribeiro would be eligible in the future.
Ribeiro is not the only South American to express his desire to play for South Africa. Ex-Sundowns forward Gaston Sirino also spoke out about his interest in playing for the South African national team. The Uruguayan has had a gone season at Kaizer Chiefs and some are calling for his inclusion in the Bafana team.
