FIVE fast facts about the Mercedes-AMG A45 S

What does a hot hatch like the Mercedes-AMG A45 S mean to you? Sure, it’s a family holdall from the three-pointed star with a big engine and taut suspension. But advances in technology mean these everyday family cars perform at a level bespoke sports cars from yesteryear couldn’t even imagine …

1. STEALTHY AND STOUT

Nowadays this usurper of the traditional sports car cannot be so loosely defined. The Mercedes-AMG A45 S can have an appearance that ranges for stealthy to downright shouty. In regular guise it’s every inch a premium prospect, but fit the Mercedes-Benz approved Street Style decal and accessory pack (pictured) – and you leave no one in any doubt as to your intentions.

2. SAFE AS HOUSES

The Mercedes-AMG A45 S – and the entire A-Class range in all its guises – comes fitted as standard with seven airbags. Then, to tame the beast, there’s active braking, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assistance. Not to mention attention assist, LED daytime running lamps and automatic rain-sensing wipers so there’s no compromise on safety in any condition.

3. BANG FOR BUCK

The hot hatch has evolved with time, as has its dynamic characteristics. In 1986 the W124 E AMG saloon, nicknamed The Hammer, defined AMG. Its beastly 5.6-litre V8 produced 280 kW. Now that’s blown away by the Mercedes-AMG A45 S with 310 kW and 500 Nm of torque. Sure, it costs R1 296 509, but we’d call that genuine bang for buck if you’re a speed freak looking for a fix. The irony? That’s roughly the same as what AMG Hammers are collecting overseas, too.

4. POWERHAUS

That’s basically V8 power from a turbocharged four-cylinder. It’s this ferocity in a small package that helps the Mercedes-AMG A45 S shine brightest. When Affalterbach instilled the ‘One Man, One Engine’ philosophy two decades ago, it vowed to build the ultimate power plant in every segment. Therefore, 310 kW and 500 Nm represents the world’s most powerful production 2.0-litre built to date, winning class titles in the coveted Engine of the Year awards.

5. HOLD THE REINS

Inserting 4Matic+ all-wheel drive for spleen-tearing traction and an eight-speed twin-clutch gearbox with Race Start function has forever revolutionised the hot hatch. That all AMG competitors have followed suit merely reinforces that fact. No rival can match the AMG’s acceleration figures though – zero-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. Numbers like that get you a whole lot of respect in the forums and out on the drag strip. Yah, just ask Cheslin Kolbe, he knows a thing or two about speed …
