Chess Federation, YMCA Sign MOU
As part of the MOU, YMCA is going to use its educational tools to tackle some of the many challenges the young people are faced with across the country.
Monrovia- Liberia Chess Federation (LCF) has signed a short-term Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Young Man Christian Council with an option to extend.

As part of the MOU, YMCA is going to use its educational tools to tackle some of the many challenges the young people are faced with across the country.
While the Liberia Chess Federation under the agreement will promote and advertise the images and brands of the YMCA during their major events.
“We are committed to you and this deal and are very happy to have signed this agreement, we will do everything to stand with YMCA,” Liberia Chess Federation President Thomas Karyah said.
He assured their partner that they will implement whatever that is in the agreement as part of LCF obligation.
Karyah called on others institutions to see the need in taking the good step of their partners to make sure there are support for people who want to make decisions for Liberia by sitting on the chess board and thinking critically.
He used the occasion to encourage chess players and supporters to consider the Young Man Christian Council as a major partner to spread chess across the country.
YMCA- Liberia president, Ebenezer Davis who signed on behalf of his institution expressed his delight and said they will give their best in working with the country’s chess governing body.
“The board of YMCA and its leadership has discovered the power and importance of building the mind of the young people through the display of the game of chess” he said.
He asserted that over the years, the YMCA has been recognized throughout the country for their involvement in the development of basketball and other physical fitness sports that have helped the young people.
“Our history with basketball is what amazed us to join the chess community and to have a lasting impact on building initiative of critical thinkers for the society” he continues.
Mr. Davis added that it is now time to make chess the number one sport that will be played by everyone as a way of improving the thinking of the society.
The signing ceremony took place on Friday, May 17, 2024 during the official closing program of the West African Chess Championship that was held in Liberia.
The tournament saw Nigeria’s FM Abdulrahman Akintoye Abdulraheem taking the top spot with an impressive 8 points, followed closely by CM Kennedy Onokpite and FM Denyefa Callistus Eyetonghan, who both secured 7 points to claim second and third places respectively.
The Women section was equally dominated by Nigerian players, Toritsemuwa Ofowino achieving a perfect score of 7 points to take first place. Abigail Karyah from Liberia took second place with 5 points, while Nigeria’s Bridget Michael secured third place with 4.5 points.
The YMCA of Liberia was founded in 1881 by Bishop Samuel D. Ferguson, an Episcopal Bishop to Liberia on assignment from Harper, Maryland County, USA. The YMCA started in Harper and only came to Monrovia in 1926 through the work of James McCritty. Its main programs include membership development, capacity building and sustainability, and special educational and social projects.
