Since taking office in March 2017, Comptroller-General Kwame Asuah Takyi (Esq.) has revolutionized the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Sports Unit, turning it into a beacon of sporting excellence.His tenure saw the establishment of the GIS Sports Unit Fund, a significant initiative that provides crucial support for sports activities, enabling the unit to achieve remarkable success.Under Takyi’s leadership, the GIS Giants, the men’s basketball team, was formed, marking an expansion in the services sporting disciplines.The teams impressive performances in the Accra Basketball League and the African Basketball Festival highlight their growing potential.Notable Achievements:- Immigration Ladies FC: Secured sponsorship, provided accommodation for civilians, and excelled in the Greater Accra Division One league.- Immigration FC: Crowned champions in the 2023/24 GARFA Division two league, qualified for the middle league play-offs, and advanced to the 2024/25 MTN FA round of 64 after a 2-0 victory over Dynamo FC.- Volleyball Team: 2017 league winners and champions of champions; second in the 2018 West Africa Zone B tournament and 2019 champions of champions; finished second in both the 2024 GAVA League, and Top 8 Championship.- Arm Wrestling Team: Won 12 medals at the 2023 African Games.- Tennis Team: Secured numerous medals.The GIS Sports Units history dates back to 1998 when the service recruited professional athletes, including sprinters, long-distance runners, and a javelin thrower, who brought home numerous laurels today, the unit boasts athletes competing in various sports like volleyball, football, table tennis, athletics, basketball, and weightlifting.Comptroller-General Takyis visionary leadership has transformed the GIS Sports Unit into a symbol of excellence, inspiring a new generation of athletes and fostering teamwork, discipline, and national pride.
