We Gained Experience – McKinstry on CHAN Exit
Uganda Cranes head coach Jonathan McKinstry remains positive despite seeing his side face an early exit from the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Cameroon.
Uganda Cranes hopes for advancement were drowned by defending champions Morocco after a humiliating 5-2 defeat at Stade de la Reunification to finish on the bottom of group C with just a point from three games
“We cannot complain about preparation, when we set out for this project, we made certain requests to the federation it terms of how we can prepare the team. I think we got 90% of what we asked for which is very good. To be honest that was pleasing,” the Northern Irishman said
He added, “The intensity of the game in competitions is different from what you get in pre-match tournaments. We were pleased with the progress of the players and they have learnt a lot. They now know that when you get to such tournaments you take your chance. They have gained experience and will be better for the future.”
Ayoub El Kaabi, Soufiane Rahmi(2), Hamza El Houssaoui and substitute Abdelilah Hafidi netted for Morocco to outshine Ibrahim Oriti and Saidi Kyeyune strikes (3-2) as Uganda bowed out on a disappointing note.
McKinstry will now turn focus to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign, hosting group C leaders Burkina Faso on 22nd March in Kampala.
