Former Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng doesn’t seem to have trust in the media’s credibility, particularly when coming to reports on the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccination.
Mogoeng, who has been retired from the Constitutional Court since October last year, was being interviewed on eNCA’s late night programme Power to Truth, when he made eyebrow-raising sentiments about the COVID-19 vaccine. His controversial stance on vaccines got him in hot water during the last year of his tenure: In December 2020, the devout Christian was leading a group in prayer when he suggested there may be COVID-19 vaccines meant to “corrupt people’s DNA.”
“If there be any (Covid-19) vaccine that is the work of the devil meant to infuse 666 in the lives of the people, meant to corrupt their DNA … may it be destroyed by fire,” he said.
There was soon backlash and calls for him to face disciplinary action over his utterances

Mogoeng has suggested there is a certain narrative about vaccines that is being promoted by the powers that be and says those with opposing stances are often sidelined and silenced.
“Let there be a free flow of information regarding coronavirus and vaccinations. Don’t come with intimidatory tactics. Don’t attack people as if you are afraid that something will come out. There have been many voices all over the world, call those people via Zoom to participate in your programme,” he told the show’s host Dr JJ Tabane.
But when Tabane challenged some of his claims about the vaccine, including the insinuation that they may be harmful, the former CJ responded: “JJ, what do you know about the science? You are pretending to be a scientist. You are just like me. You are acting on what you are told and you swallowed it just like that. Why are you acting like some doctor of medicine, you know nothing about this thing. You’re not an authority”
The broadcaster posted a clip of the cringeworthy interview on its Twitter page.
