Grosjean cheated death on the opening lap of Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix when his car veered off track and collided with the barriers, instantly bursting in flames.

Grosjean was helped from his car by safety and medical staff which included South Africa’s very own Alan van der Merwe.

The 34-year-old Haas driver was airlifted to a nearby hospital with burns to his hands.

Grosjean, in his final year with the Haas team, appeared to be in good spirits as he thanked all those concerned for saving his life.
