Volta lake disaster: Boat sailor arrested after deadly capsize on Volta Lake
In a fresh update to the Volta Lake disaster as sighted on 3news.com, the police have captured Sailor Gabriel Ajigodi, who was at the helm when his boat capsized on the Volta Lake on Saturday morning.
He is being questioned about the fatal journey while he is being held at the Ada Foah Police Station. Following the tragedy, five people have been verified dead and a number of others are still missing.
After the disaster, an assemblyman from the area Daniel Adzakpa informed TV3 that the boat was overloaded.
There were more than 60 people on board the skiff, which was only meant to hold 25. Some witnesses claim that they informed Gabriel Ajigodi about the overload and begged him to take them back to their boarding location.
Mary Donuki, 22, said to TV3’s Joseph Armstrong on Saturday that they requested to be sent back to Azizanya when they realized the burden was too great.
According to reports, the sailor disregarded their cries and promised to transport them securely to Azizakpe. But the catastrophe struck in the middle of the trip.
Mary Donuki lost her only one-and-a-half-year baby. There is still a search party in the area striving to locate some more survivors.
