Another Voëlklip tragedy has occurred. The cliff in Herolds Bay, George has unfortunately become known for claiming lives and Thursday afternoon was no different. A car carrying a mother and her two children sadly plunged off the road and down the cliff.
The mother has since been declared dead, the eight-year-old boy by some miracle managed to escape the crash while the car was rolling and the two-year-old daughter is sadly still missing.
MOTHER KILLED, DAUGHTER STILL MISSING IN YET ANOTHER VOËLKLIP TRAGEDY
The Western Cape Government Health’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a tragic call on Thursday.
Communication Officer Deanna Bessick confirmed that the crash involved a mother and her eight-year-old son and two-year-old daughter.
“The vehicle which the family was travelling in rolled and crashed into the ocean while driving along the R404 on Voëlklip road in Herolds Bay, George. The incident occurred at 12:30 on Thursday, 21 January 2021,” said Bessick.
Bessick said two rescue vehicles were on the scene at Voëlklip, as well as AMS who were assisting with the search for the two-year-old.
“The eight-year-old boy is safe, he sustained mild injuries and he is receiving medical treatment. Unfortunately, the adult female sustained fatal injuries. We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the friends and family of the deceased,” Bessick said on Thursday.
The South African reached out to SAPS Captain Malcolm Pojie for further comment, however, there was no response at the time of publication.
CLIFF OF DEATH CLAIMED MANY LIVES
Heidi Scheepers and her two children — six-year-old Cozette and two-year-old Hugo — went missing on Tuesday afternoon 22 October 2019, after visiting Herolds Bay beach for a walk. Heidi’s husband, the 36-year-old Ettienne, had gone with them to the beach but left on foot to attend to some of their family businesses.
The bodies of Scheepers and Hugo were recovered in the water near Herolds Bay, however, the body of six-year-old Cozette was never retrieved. Their vehicle is also believed to have plummeted down the cliff in Voëlklip.
On Wednesday 29 January 2020, a man believed to be in his 40s was also killed when his car plunged down a cliff on Voëlklip Road in Herolds Bay. Once the man had been retrieved, paramedics found that the man had already succumbed to his numerous injuries.
