VIDEO: Bobi Wine Arrives at EC Headquarters

Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has this Wednesday morning arrived at the Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters in Kampala.

He is expected to meet the EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama.

Bobi on Tuesday suspended his campaigns, accusing security forces of blocking his movements and using teargas and bullets to disperse his supporters.

Following the violence in Kayunga yesterday, Bobi told journalists he would today meet with the EC leadership to discuss the viability of his campaign.

Security has been tightened in different parts of Kampala to counter possible violence.

“Like I said a few days ago, we start every day not knowing how it will end. We come in peace to preach our message, but the military responds to us with brutality and violence,” said Bobi yesterday.

The EC recently warned Bobi and FDC presidential candidate Patrick Amuriat against holding processions, saying they risked spreading the Coronavirus.

“Some candidates are mobilizing their supporters to gather at campaign venues in large numbers. It is important to note that The Public Health (Control of COVID-19) (Amendment No.3) Rules, 2020, issued on 9th November 2020, provides that gatherings for purposes of political meetings should not exceed two hundred (200) persons,” said EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama.

“Some candidates are conducting processions along public roads, through towns and trading centres, and are also holding rallies in non-designated venues as per the harmonised campaign programme. This is in violation of the Commission’s Guidelines that the campaigns should be conducted in observance of Standard Operating Procedures (social distancing, hand washing, and wearing of masks) and in designated places,” he added.

Bobi says his campaigns are being frustrated by security forces

Bobi and Amuriat have been addressing rallies in different parts of the country in acts of defiance.

They claim the state is using the COVID-19 pandemic to block them from reaching out to people ahead of the 2021 polls.

COVID-19 has so far killed 201 people in Uganda since the outbreak of the pandemic earlier this year.

Byabakama warmed candidates against making impromptu stopovers in trading centres and attracting and addressing public gatherings along busy highways from their car rooftops.

“The Commission reiterates that processions and public/mass rallies remain banned in accordance with the measures put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” said Byabakama.
