UPDATE: Bank branches offering IDs and passports services
Currently, a total of 30 bank branches in South Africa offer smart IDs and passports services. The number of bank branches supporting these services is set to more than double in the near future, with another 34 bank branches being added to the list. Here are the details.
Another 34 bank branches to offer DHA services
According to MyBroadband, the Banking Association of South Africa (BASA) has been facilitating discussions on public-private partnership (PPP) agreements between the banks and the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). BASA’s Head of Prudential Division, Mark Brits, stated that these agreements are close to being finalised.
FNB plans to have representation across all nine provinces in urban centres. Its current plan is to add 18 eHomeAffairs-enabled branches, taking its total tally to 25. The bank’s initial focus will be on provinces where it does not currently support the service.
Absa has an additional 12 branches currently ready for activation.
Nedbank confirmed expansion of its eHomeAffairs services, but did not give details about the branches it plans to add.
Discovery Bank plans to add four more locations in the following areas: Century City and Sea Point in the Western Cape, Pretoria in Gauteng, and Umhlanga in KwaZulu-Natal.
Markedly, Standard Bank seems to be taking a more conservative approach. The bank will only review its strategy once the PPP agreements are in place.
“We will need to validate the effectiveness of the operations over a period of six to 12 months, as well as the commercial viability of the PPP model, before we can decide on expansion to any further branches.”
