UNEB Cautions Candidates Against Cheating as Exams Begin

2 min read

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has cautioned candidates to refrain from any form of examination malpractices as S.4 candidates begin their exams.

Today Friday, 26th February 2021, is the official day for the commencement of Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations for the candidates of 2020 academic year.

Although, the first examination paper will be on Monday, today is the Briefing day for candidates, which UNEB considers the first exam.

The UNEB spokesperson, Jennifer Kalule has cautioned candidates against any form of cheating, which could lead to cancellation of their results.

In today’s briefing session of candidates, Mrs Kalule said that Head Teachers or those concerned, are expected to explain to the candidates the consequences of cheating, take them through the various instructions, inform them of their roles and responsibilities, and rules and regulations in regards to conduct of exams.

“As UNEB, we have established that most of the cases of cheating by candidates, always arise from lack of briefing or lack of knowledge and understanding of how grave the problem is,” she said.

“For instance, candidates must know that when somebody copies from you, both the one who has copied and the one from whom they have copied are both culpable. So, in other words, as an individual candidate, it is your responsibility to protect your answer sheet. Make sure no one copies you because if somebody copies you, you too are culpable. So, you have that responsibility.”

“Make sure when you go to an examination room, you don’t enter with any chit. Make sure no teacher or invigilator comes in to give you a chit to support you. Make sure you don’t allow anybody to tamper with all the effort you have put in, all the years you have been in school. That person who is going to come and tamper with you is likely to lead to the cancellation of your examination,” Mrs Kalule cautioned candidates.

The s4 exams will be followed by PLE (P7) candidates whose briefing will be March 26, 2021 while conduct of examinations will be from March 30th – 31st, 2021.

The Briefing date for UACE candidates will be April 9, 2021 while the conduct of examinations will be from April 12th – 3rd May, 2021.

UCE has a total of 333,775 candidates. Of these, 166,294 are males while 167,481 are females.

The national Examinations for the 2020 academic are being done in 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic lockdown that led to closure of all education institutions in the country.
