UMSC Cautions against Complacency in Adhering to Covid-19 SOPs
The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has issued a directive to all regional and district Khadhis as well as Sheikhs and all Imams countrywide to ensure that all Mosques observe Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to mitigate the spread of the virus.
“It has been observed that many Mosques have relaxed as regards observing the Standard Operating Procedures and guidelines on the prevention of covid- 19,” reads part of the circular by Ramathan Mugalu, Secretary General UMSC.
Among the procedures to be re-enforced include, getting Uthu (ablution) from home, carrying and using one’s own prayer mat at the mosque, sanitizing or washing hands with soap regularly before and after prayers.
Others include wearing a mask at all times, keeping a social distance of at least one and half meters during prayers as well and avoiding shaking hands while at the Mosque and everywhere else.
“This is to ensure that the SOPs are observed in our Mosques and religious gatherings to prevent the spread covid-19, any Mosque which refuses to comply should immediately be closed by the Regional Khadhi,” the circular further reads.
Five months ago, President Museveni re-opened places of worship which had been closed in March 2020 as a Covid-19 preventive measure.
