ULS Launches Task Force to Prosecute Bobi Wine Violence Perpetrators
The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has revealed that it has set up a Task Force that shall pursue prosecution of all culprits who participated in violating human rights, during the protests, that broke up after the arrest of the National Unity Platform Presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine in Luuka District and FDC’s Patrick Amuriat Oboi, on Wednesday.
Police revealed that three civilians lost their lives and over 34 were arrested following the protests.
By press time, Police was still engaging in running battles with a section of youths in some parts of Kampala, who were protesting Bobi Wine’s continued dentition.
Addressing journalists at their offices in Kampala today Thursday, Pheona Wall, the ULS president said that this has been done to ensure that all people get justice.
“We call upon each and every one who has evidence to give it to us, in some instances, we have videos but we don’t know where they were captured from so your participation in this investigation will help us bring justice to everyone who was affected,” she said
“This investigation will cut across all people both the security personnel who used excessive force while handling civilians and the civilians who turned violent.”
According to Wall, the Taskforce shall consist of 20 senior Legal Officers from ULS in Kampala and others from different regions that make up Uganda, especially where the violence broke out.
“We should not be viewed as people who are taking over the roles of investigative agencies but one of our fundamental principles is to avail justice to those who need it and we aim at investigating and prosecuting all perpetrators,” she said.
Wall provided a tall free line of 0800100150, which she said any one with evidence can call and privately alert them.
“We shall make sure that the gathered information given to our lawyers who will present it to Courts of Law and make sure that the perpetrators are dealt with,” she noted.
Faisal Mwalira the Buganda Region ULS representative noted that this investigation will not only help to identify perpetrators but also reduce on the future violence
The lawyers body called upon the Electoral Commission together with the Uganda Police Force to immediately hold a meeting with all presidential aspirants and agree on the mode of campaigning that should be adopted without causing violence and unnecessary deaths.
“ULS will continue with its Advisory and Watchdog role on issues concerning the rule of Law as the Country gears up to execute its Democratic rights of electing new leaders,” she said.
She advised civilians from participating in deadly protests which involves in; looting, assault and vandalism since they will just lead them to prisons in case they are found guilty and miss voting for the new government, which they like.
