Uganda Hippos Lift CECAFA U-20 Championship

Tanzania 1-4 Uganda Hippos

Uganda Hippos have dethroned Tanzania as the champions for the CECAFA U-20 Challenge Cup.

The Hippos overcame 2019 champions and hosts Tanzania 1-4 in the final played on Wednesday afternoon at Black Rhino Academy Sports stadium in Arusha.

Goals by Richard Basangwa, Steven Sserwadda, Ivan Bogere and Kenneth Semakula ensured an emphatic victory for Uganda while Suleiman Hamis scored Tanzania’s consolation.

The Morley Byekwaso coached side went into the lead after 12 minutes thanks to Richard Basangwa’s diving header off a Yiga Najib free kick.

On the 31st minute mark, Tanzania drew matters level when Suleiman Hamis converted a penalty kick that resulted from Musa Ramathan’s handball in the area.

Uganda Hippos later restored their lead on the 41st minute when Yiga Najib released Steven Serwadda who poked home the second goal.

Striker Bogere would have made it three before recess but failed to convert his kick from the penalty mark, shooting over the bar. The penalty had resulted from a foul on Ismail Mugulusi who was brought down in the box.

On the 63rd minute, free scoring Bogere made amends for the missed penalty when he headed home Yiga Najib’s well delivered corner kick to stretch Uganda’s lead.

Left back Aziz Kayondo who was earlier cautioned for a foul, wrapped up the goal fest with a distant shot beating Tanzania’s goalkeeper for the fourth.

Uganda now dethrones Tanzania as champions of the CECAFA region, but both have directly qualified for the U-20 AFCON tournament in Mauritania next year.
