The Director of Sports and Wellness at the University of Ghana (UG), Dr. Austin Luguterah, has highlighted the importance of institutional management for sports facilities, affirming that his department is well-suited to oversee the UG Stadium.Since succeeding Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, Dr. Luguterah has pushed for structured, institution-led management of sports venues, focusing on proper facility maintenance and athlete development. In an interview on JoyNews Prime Take, he pointed to research supporting institutional oversight for effective facility upkeep.”Research has shown that sports facilities are better managed by institutions. For instance, our swimming pool has been consistently maintained over the years. We have policies in place, and even during strikes, staff are still here to ensure upkeep,” he noted.Dr. Luguterah also highlighted the maintenance needs of the UG Stadium’s Mondo tracks. “The Mondo tracks have a unique upkeep routine. Theyre like carpetsneeding periodic washing, cleaning, and watering. Weve installed multiple water outlets around the stadium to make this process efficient, often working in the evenings,” he added. With strong policies and attention to specialised maintenance, Dr. Luguterah asserts that institutional management is key to sustaining vibrant sports facilities.
