The city and other parts of Gauteng were struck by heavy downpours recently. At least 1 000 people have been left destitute as a result of the Tshwane floods.

Tshwane Emergency Services had previously reported that two people had died – the body of a man was found after his Ford Ranger bakkie was washed away in Centurion. While another body was found at the Soul City Informal Settlement in Mamelodi, where a man drowned in his shack.

“In a continued search for possible victims who might have been swept away in the floods, the South African Police Service (SAPS) recovered the body of a man on the afternoon of 6 February 2022 from a bakkie that was washed away on the night of 5 February 2022”

Now, two more bodies have been found in the wake of the Tshwane floods: In Centurion, the dive team discovered the body of a man at the Centurion Lake Hotel. The man’s Audi SUV was washed away and stuck near the hotel. Another body was found downstream from the Roodeplaat Dam. It is that of a man who was on a boat with a friend during the floods. The friend managed to make it to safety.

In addition, Tshwane Emergency Services says they are still searching for three people, an Uber driver and his two passengers in Midstream.

“We call on residents to remain on high alert, to never cross flooded low bridges, to move themselves and valuables to higher ground, if under threat of flooding, and to immediately call for help by dialing our toll-free emergency number, 107”
