Tshwane floods: Death toll rises to four, others STILL missing

In a sombre development from the recent Tshwane floods, the number of people dead has now risen to four, after rescue officials found two more bodies on Tuesday, 8 February 2022.

The city and other parts of Gauteng were struck by heavy downpours recently. At least 1 000 people have been left destitute as a result of the Tshwane floods.

Tshwane Emergency Services had previously reported that two people had died – the body of a man was found after his Ford Ranger bakkie was washed away in Centurion. While another body was found at the Soul City Informal Settlement in Mamelodi, where a man drowned in his shack.

“In a continued search for possible victims who might have been swept away in the floods, the South African Police Service (SAPS) recovered the body of a man on the afternoon of 6 February 2022 from a bakkie that was washed away on the night of 5 February 2022”

“The Emergency Services Department confirmed reports that the body of a man, who allegedly drowned in his shack at Soul City Informal Settlement in Mamelodi, was recovered by the SAPS and Pathology Services”

TSHWANE FLOODS: THREE STILL MISSING

Now, two more bodies have been found in the wake of the Tshwane floods: In Centurion, the dive team discovered the body of a man at the Centurion Lake Hotel. The man’s Audi SUV was washed away and stuck near the hotel. Another body was found downstream from the Roodeplaat Dam. It is that of a man who was on a boat with a friend during the floods. The friend managed to make it to safety.

In addition, Tshwane Emergency Services says they are still searching for three people, an Uber driver and his two passengers in Midstream.

“We call on residents to remain on high alert, to never cross flooded low bridges, to move themselves and valuables to higher ground, if under threat of flooding, and to immediately call for help by dialing our toll-free emergency number, 107”
