Thunderstorms, strong winds and cold weather expected on FRIDAY

Severe thunderstorms, strong winds, and cold weather are expected in several parts of South Africa on Friday. 

BRACE YOURSELF – THUNDERSTORMS, WINDS, AND COLD WEATHER ARE EXPECTED

The SA Weather Service warned that a cold front is expected to pass through the Western Cape on Friday, likely bringing strong westerly to southwesterly winds.

The affected areas include the coastline between Cape Agulhas and Knysna: 

Overberg

Bredasdorp

Stilbay

Mosselbay

George

Knysna 

Wilderness 

Struisbay 

“[Wind] speeds between 50-70km/h and gusting between 80-90km/h [are expected] over the south coast (Western Cape) from mid-day, moderating from the west towards the evening.”

WIND SPEEDS BETWEEN 50-70KM/H AND GUSTING 80-90KM/H ARE EXPECTED

In addition, wave heights of between 3 to 3.5 metres are expected in the region. 

The potential impacts of the strong winds include:

Difficulty in sea navigation.

Small sea vessels are at risk of taking on water and capsizing in certain areas.

Localised disruption to beachfront activities.

A warning for severe thunderstorms was also issued for these parts of the country:

Umzimvubu / Mount Ayliff

Ntabankulu

Mhlontlo / Tsolo

King Sabata Dalindyebo / Mthatha

“Localised damage to infrastructure, settlements, property, and vehicles is possible. Minor vehicle accidents may occur due to slippery roads in the presence of hail. Localised service disruption due to power surges/disruptions can be expected.” 

SAWS

The SAWS advised the public to stay indoors if possible and away from metal objects.

“Do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects. Do not go fishing or play golf, as both the golf clubs and fishing rods are good conductors of electricity.”
