‘They made a BLUNDER’: Ex-Joburg mayor’s grim WARNING to the DA

2 min read

After losing the City of Johannesburg’s mayoral chain to the Democratic Alliance (DA), former mayor Mpho Moerane is now warning of an incoming disaster in the council, given the absence of a solid coalition agreement.

Moerane served as Joburg mayor briefly following the passing of Jolidee Matongo, who himself was completing the late Geoff Makhubo’s term in office. Moerane failed to secure enough votes in the council on Monday, 22 November 2021, and lost to his namesake, the DA’s Dr Mpho Phalatse.

Phalatse’s victory is largely due to the fact that the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ActionSA agreed to support the DA’s candidacy to avoid another ANC-run council by any means necessary.

Moerane: ‘It’s not going to be easy for the DA’ in Joburg

Given the fact that there is currently no coalition agreement between the DA and ActionSA (as well as the EFF) to govern in the City of Johannesburg, Mpho Moerane reckons it’s only a matter of time before things go south in the council.

Moerane says the DA would need the support of the parties to pass budgets and all kinds of motions in the council. He claims the DA is now holding talks with other parties – the IFP and Patriotic Alliance (PA) and offering them positions on its Executive Committee, possibly to pull a similar stunt as the ANC did in eThekwini. The party used a recent amendment to the Municipal Structures Amendment Act to improve its chances of victory. As per the amendment, a political party is now allowed to nominate a councillor from another party or political interest to one or more of its allocated seats on to the council’s executive committee.

“As the ANC, we are not going to go into any coalition with the DA, especially if they are working with ActionSA and EFF. But I can tell you we are heading for a rough ride. We are heading for a collision and it’s not going to be easy for the DA to govern without talking to ActionSA and EFF. They have a serious problem. They made a blunder and there are going to be some interesting times coming and we are certain that the municipality is going down a spiral”
