The world’s first fully functional foldable laptop unveiled in South Africa

We reported back in 2019 that Lenovo is working on the world’s foldable laptop, or was we like to refer to it, the laptop of the future. Lenovo unveiled the X1 Fold on 9 December 2020, and we still believe it’s the laptop of the future.

You’re probably thinking that laptops already fold, but no, that’s not the type of fold we’re talking about it. The Lenovo X1 Fold folds along the screen. Think of it as a tablet that folds; or rather, a 13.3-inch display that can fold up to the size of a hardcover book.

Concept origins

The prospect was first hinted back in 2017, and the foldable PC concept was first unveiled in May 2019. It’s now being described as the world’s first fully functional PC with a folding OLED display.

“Designed to offer unprecedented productivity, it offers a ground-breaking new form factor that will reimagine mobile computing”.

Use the multiple modes available, from a small footprint device or make use of its full 13.3-inch display. The X1 Fold is made of a “combination of lightweight alloys and carbon fibre and covered in a luxurious leather folio cover”.

Durable foldable design

The innovative piece of tech weighs less than 1 kilogram, make it the ideal travel partner while still boasting a premium look. It’s unique multi-link torque hinge mechanism ensures the smoothest folding experience.

Lenovo assures us that the OLED display on the X Fold 1 “has also undergone extensive performance and durability testing, ranging from ball dropping, to pen tapping and dynamic stress tests”.

Ultra-versatility

As an ultra-versatile device, the ThinkPad X1 Fold enables users to leverage two independent displays to optimise efficiency. Scenarios may include participating in a video call using the upper screen while taking notes or editing a presentation on the lower screen.

Use cases include the flexibility to operate the X1 Fold in either portrait or landscape mode for added convenience. When used in landscape mode, the integrated kickstand within the leather folio cover ensures optimal viewing angles.

Pricing and availability in South Africa

Preorders for the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold are currently open in South Africa for R100 000. However, Lenovo also said that “South African pricing will vary for the different configurations and specs that consumers opt for”.

The X1 Fold will land in stores in early 2021.
