Miss SA Lalela Mswane topped the Twitter trends list this morning (26 November) after Israel banned travel to and from South Africa following the news of a new COVID-19 variant in the country on Thursday 25 November.
ISRAEL BANS TRAVEL FROM SA
It seems Lalela Mswane’s decision may have been made for her as B.1.1.529, a new COVID-19 variant, was detected in South Africa this week.
Following the news, the United Kingdom banned flights from Southern African countries — so South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana, Eswatini and Zimbabwe have been put on the “red” list.
“@UKHSA is investigating a new variant. More data is needed but we’re taking precautions now. From noon tomorrow six African countries will be added to the red list, flights will be temporarily banned, and UK travellers must quarantine,” wrote health secretary Sajid Javid on Twitter.
Israel followed suit and banned entry of Southern African tourists to and from the country. The other countries were also placed on the red list. Israelis are also banned from travelling to countries on the “red” list.
Tweeps were quick to point out that Miss SA Lalela Mswane should take this as a sign not to compete in the Miss Universe pageant which is set to take place on 12 December.
THE CONTROVERSY: LALELA AND THE MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT
Lalela’s short reign since she has been crowned as Miss SA on 16 October has been marred by controversy. The hosts of the Miss SA pageant announced that Lalela would be participating in the Miss Universe pageant which will be held in Israel this year.
However, she has been under pressure to boycott the pageant due to Israel being described as an “apartheid state”.
Lalela and the Miss South Africa Organisation however have refused to budge and affirmed that she will still be participating in the pageant.
TWEEPS TO LALELA: ‘THE UNIVERSE DOESN’T WANT YOU THERE’
Tweeps seem to be “relieved” now that Israel has banned travel from Southern African countries and Lalela may not be able to participate.
“Can you see how the universe doesn’t want you there,” wrote @slaylyn_05.
Others think Lalela will be granted special entry into the country.
