SWAG recognizes Nii Odartey Lamptey’s exploits for Ghana

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has given a
meritorious award to former Ghanaian attacker Nii Odartey Lamptey.

The award was presented to Odartey by the President of the association, Mr. Kwabena Yeboah on Monday in Accra.

The SWAG President in his presentation of the award read the
citation as follows;

“You dazzled the premiership playing for Aston Villa after
your exploits with Anderlecht. You are on record to be one of the few Ghanaians
to feature for All the National Teams. Your life after football is an
inspiration to the current generation as the Proprietor for Glow Lamp Soccer
Academy, Glow Lamp Farms and Glow Lamp School. SWAG proudly bestows on you the
Meritorious Award for your sterling contribution to Sports in Ghana”.

Odartey won the SWAG footballer of the year in 1990/91 after
helping Ghana’s U-17 team, the Black Starlets win the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

At age 15, Nii was a household name in Ghana’s football circles and he featured for the Black Stars in the 1992 African Cup of Nations held in Senegal. Ghana won silver after loosing to Ivory Coast on penalties.

In recognition of his exquisite football he displayed at the
FIFA U-17 Tournament, he was named the 1991 fifth bestAfrican
footballer of the year. Lamptey’s brilliance led an enterprising and
unpredictable Black Satellites to win the African U-20 Cup of Nationsand then won silver at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in
Australia in 1993.

The former Aston Villa star also featured for Ghana’s Black Meteors
in the 1992 Olympic Games held in Barcelona when Ghana won bronze.

Nii Odartey retired from football in 2008. He is currently a
cattle and sheep farmer on the outskirts of Accra and manages an academy and
the Glow Lamp school.

He subsequently expressed his gratitude to SWAG for the great recognition of
his works and influence in Ghana football.

The 45th SWAG MTN Awards will be held at the Splash Alisa Hotel on Saturday
October 10, with the Chief Justice gracing the event.
