By Kingsley Adegboye

Surveyors under the aegis of The Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria, (APPSN), a sub group of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), have decried the declining ethical standards in the surveying profession and stressed the need for concerted efforts towards making the profession an enviable and respectable one.

Speaking at the 2024 Annual Professional Workshop and Luncheon, themed: “The Practice of Cadastral; Understanding The Technicalities, Ethics, Market Dynamics, Policies, Innovation/Reforms, Value Added Services & Its Politics,” in Lagos, they urged members to continuously abide by ethical standards of the profession as laid down.

They also charged themselves to leverage technology in order to foster a sustainable and quality cadastral practice to provide reputable services.

The guest lecturer at the workshop and luncheon, Surv. Olumide Adewebi, stressed the need for practising surveyors to shun sharp practices and other activities that could tarnish their image,
noting that members should see surveying is a competitive business.

Adewebi urged professional surveyors in the state to break the cycle of regular undercutting and agent signing and make a deliberate effort at addressing challenges of Cadastral practice in the state to ensure sustainability of the practice.

Adewebi who disclosed that there is nothing wrong with Cadastral practice except individuals’ approach to it, said Cadastral practice is between 70 and 80 per cent globally.

He however, called for enhanced training, education and regulations to address quackery in a bid to further ensure growth and lucrative Cadastral practice in the state.

In his welcome address, APPSN’s Chairman, Lagos branch, Ibikunle Adaranijo, said the aim of the event was to provide an opportunity to educate professionals on emerging trends, equipping them with knowledge and expositions in cadastral practice.

He also solicited the support of all stakeholders in eradicating quackery in the profession, affirming his association’s determination not to relent on its campaign against the menace.

“We will not relent on our campaign against quackery, even on our radio programme aired every Friday on Radio Lagos, we always harp on this and our effort is already yielding results.”
