Springboks: What they need to do to secure the Rugby Championship
The Springboks have one hand on the Rugby Championship heading into their clash against Argentina.
The Springboks are undefeated in the 2024 Rugby Championship under Rassie Erasmus. Furthermore, they fresh off the back of successive victories over their age-old nemesis and arch rivals the All Blacks.
Four wins from four see’s Rassie and the Boks on the brink of securing the coveted Rugby Championship trophy for the first time since 2019. Moreover, it will be the first time they have won the full edition since 2009 with the 2019 edition shortened due to the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
SPRINGBOKS DOMINANCE SETS THE TONE
The Springboks won 31-27 in a high-scoring encounter at Ellis Park before securing the Freedom Cup after winning the second test 18-12 in an intense and grueling encounter at in Cape Town.
Meanwhile, South Africa started their Rugby Championship encounter with two comfortable victories over Australia. Furthermore, they scored back-to-back bonus point victories after winning 33-7 in Brisbane and 30-12 in Perth.
Now, the Boks sit comfortably at the top of the log with 18 points from four matches. Argentina, who are in second place sit 8 points the Springboks on 10 points. Meanwhile, NZ have 7 points and Australia sit on 4. Therefore, only Argentina can mathematically catch up to them but the Boks can secure the title this weekend in Argentina.
PERMUTATIONS FOR SA TO WIN THE RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP
The Springboks will be crowned the 2024 Rugby Championship champions at 1am on Sunday, if they win by any margin.
So, that is the straight forward permutation.
However, even a draw will see the Springboks crowned Champions. Meaning, they just need two more points to secure the coveted trophy. Theoretically, two losses by less than seven will still see the Boks crowned champion unless Argentina can score 4 or more tries in both tests and deny the Springboks a losing bonus point in at least one.
