Baba Yara Sports Stadium pitchThe Ministry of Youth and Sports has responded to criticism from North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa regarding the use of public funds for renovations at Ghanas national stadia.Ablakwa raised concerns after CAF withdrew its approval of the Baba Yara Stadiums pitch, calling into question the effectiveness of the Ministry’s renovation projects. In a statement, the Ministry defended its actions, explaining that substantial work had been completed at the Accra, Baba Yara, and Essipong stadia since 2018.They provided a detailed list of improvements, which included significant repairs to seating, lighting, and safety features, all of which were necessary to bring the facilities up to international standards.”It is important to stress that between 2009 and 2017, no major renovation was carried out at these stadia,” the Ministry pointed out, highlighting the long period of neglect that preceded their tenure. They also underscored that, since the renovations, these stadia have hosted multiple CAF and FIFA-certified events, including the Africa Womens Cup of Nations, the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, and AFCON qualifiers. The Ministry concluded by assuring the public that their commitment to maintaining these facilities remains strong and that the necessary steps will continue to be taken to ensure that Ghanas national stadia meet the required standards for international competitions.
