Southampton vs Man Utd: Preview, team news, head-to-head

Manchester United return to action this weekend as they travel to Southampton for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off in the Premier League.

Just three games into the new Premier League season, Erik ten Hag is under pressure once more after consecutive defeats for Manchester United.

A 3-0 humbling at the hands of Liverpool on the back of a 2-1 loss at Brighton has done little to suggest the Red Devils have made substantial progress from finishing eighth last season.

“We will see where we are in May. It is very early in the season and it is about winning trophies (and) being as high as possible in the league,” Ten Hag said on Thursday.

“It (noise around the club) doesn’t impact me – I know in the process where we are. We have to integrate a lot of young players in the team.”

Southampton have also suffered in the early rounds, losing each of their three fixtures upon their return to England’s top flight.

Team News

Ugarte could make his debut for United following his participation with Uruguay during the international break, while Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro, and Rasmus Hojlund are all unavailable.

For Southampton, summer signing Aaron Ramsdale will continue in goal with Gavin Bazunu sidelined until at least 2025 due to a ruptured Achilles. Ryan Fraser could be in contention following his move from Newcastle, but Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ross Stewart are still doubts. Maxwel Cornet might make his debut.
