South Africans receiving their British Citizenship

2 min read

British Citizenship Statistics

The latest statistics by the UK Home Office shows that 3,035 South Africans have received their British citizenship in the first two quarters of 2020. This number is relatively high if one takes into account the effect of Covid-19 on the processing of immigration applications.

Destination of Choice

The figure also shows that the United Kingdom is still a very popular emigration destination for South Africans.  Several factors contribute to the popularity of the UK as a popular emigration destination.

South Africans who are settled in the UK say some of the factors that make this their ideal choice include:

  • The relatively short travel time between the countries,
  • There is no culture or language barrier,
  • The UK is the financial hub of Europe,
  • The diaspora of South Africans in the UK that makes the transition easier.

The benefits of British citizenship

There are several advantages to getting British citizenship. You will have unrestricted entry to the UK, and will no longer be subject to immigration control. A British passport means more visa-free travel to many countries. The migrant who receives British citizenship will also enjoy the same benefits as a person born as a British citizen.

Dual Citizenship for South Africans

South Africans are in the fortunate position that they are allowed to hold more than one nationality. They can thus hold both South African and British citizenship.

However, it is important to note that one first has to apply to retain your SA citizenship before taking on any other nationality through naturalisation. If a person fails to follow this process, they will automatically lose their South African citizenship.  Furthermore, we have found that even if a person takes up a second nationality through direct descent, it is important to safeguard his/her SA nationality status. Proof can then be submitted when a newly issued SA passport is applied for from outside South Africa as to avoid any difficulties when such applications are lodged.

You have to retain your South African citizenship through a formal application, and you have to apply before you apply for your British citizenship. Breytenbachs will be able to guide you through the process.
