Malatsi was promoted to the Chiefs first team in 1999 as a Grade 11 learner after making his way up from the club’s development.

In an interview with Off The Pitch with TK, Malatsi revealed his first salary after being promoted to the Chiefs first team was R1 200.

Malatsi would then go on to earn R10 000 before deductions the following year after Chiefs realised that he was improving.

Malatsi would leave Chiefs in 2004 after fighting a losing battle with partying, alcohol and drugs while on the books of the Soweto giants.

And the time, he was nowhere close to earning more than the R10 000 per month salary he got in his second year with the Chiefs first team.

MALATSI’S FIRST KAIZER CHIEFS SALARY REVEALED

“I never had an agent. My mother was responsible for me. She was present when I signed my first contract,” said Malatsi.

“My first salary at Chiefs was R1 200. I’d say it’s their rule that when you are promoted from the reserve side to the first team everybody gets R1 200.”

“At the time, the manager was Screamer Tshabalala, then the following year (2000) when they noticed that I was performing well, they increased my salary.

“They increased it to R10 000 but I’d get around R8 500 after tax deductions,” confirmed Malatsi.

“My signing-on-fee… they gave me R20 000 at the time,” added Malatsi.
