Several weather warnings issued for various parts of SA
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued several impact-based warnings for various provinces.
The warnings which for severe thunderstorms and disruptive rainfall are valid from Saturday, 21 December to Sunday, 22 December.
ANOTHER WEATHER WARNING ISSUED FOR KWAZULU-NATAL
The weather service issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal.
“Possible severe thunderstorms are expected over the western and southern parts of KZN on Saturday and over the western parts on Sunday.
“These thunderstorms may be accompanied by large amounts of small hail, damaging winds, excessive lightning, and heavy downpours which may lead to localised impacts,” SAWS said.
DISRUPRITVE RAIN IN GAUTENG, MPUMALANGA AND LIMPOPO
SAWS also issued a yellow level 4 warning for disruptive rain in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga which is also valid from Saturday, 21 December until Sunday, 22 December.
The weather service said widespread rainfall is observed over Limpopo and expected over Mpumalanga on Saturday, with heavy rainfall possible due to the influx of tropical moisture, with places exceeding 50mm of rainfall accumulation.
“Some parts have already received moderate amounts of rainfall over the past two days and thus soil moisture is close/at saturation. Therefore, there is a low likelihood of flooding with significant impacts possible in some areas,” SAWS said.
Additionally, a yellow level 2 weather warning for severe thunderstorms has been issued for the Eastern Cape. A surface trough extending through the province coupled with upper air perturbations is expected to result in thunderstorm activity in the Eastern Cape.
“There is a possibility that the expected storms may be severe and produce heavy downpours, excessive lightning, damaging winds and hail and result in impacts places over Joe Gqabi, Chris Hani, OR Tambo, and Alfred Nzo District Municipalities.”
