SANDF seizes skin lightening creams worth R14 million [WATCH]

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) intercepted a truck transporting illegal goods from Mozambique last week. The seized goods included skin lightening creams worth millions of rand.


Captain A Tamela said seven Infantry Batallion soldiers pulled off the operation in the Mpumalanga area on Wednesday, 8 December.

The soldiers received a tip-off about the truck from Mozambique and intercepted it along the N4 highway in the Komatipoort area.

“On further inspection of the goods, it was established that the truck was loaded with bran on both sides but had boxes of skin-lightening creams in the middle of the load,” said Captain Tamela of the Joint Tactical Headquarters in Mpumalanga.

The truck was escorted to the SARS warehouse in Komatipoort & the following contents were offloaded and handed over to SARS
291 x boxes of Betasol;
15x boxes of Diproson.
36 x boxes of Epiderm Lotion.
05 x boxes of Carolight.
Total estimated value of creams is R 14 235 600.00.

SANDF diverted the truck to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) warehouse in Komatipoort and the skin lightening creams were offloaded and handed to the customs authority.

The estimated value of the goods, which included  291 boxes of Betasol, 15 boxes of Diproson, 36 boxes of Epiderm Lotion and five boxes of Carolight, is R14 235 600.

In an unrelated incident, a joint operation between SANDF and the Detective Dog Unit from SARS Customs led to the confiscation of illicit cigarettes at the Beitbridge Port of Entry.

The illicit cigarettes, worth an estimated R617 628, were handed to SARS.
