SA national championships result: Reinardt Janse van Rensburg crowned champion

The 2022 South African National Road and Time Trial Championships in Graskop, Mpumalanga this past weekend proved to be a tough and hotly contested affair.

In Sunday’s 169km men’s elite road race, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg was crowned champion when he won a sprint finish to beat Willie Smit with Marc Pritzen in third.

Janse van Rensburg, 33, took to social media to express his joy at winning, writing: “So happy and proud I could be SA champion again this year! Was an extremely tough race and I had to go to my depths to pull it off!! Thanks to all my support crew and all the people helping behind the scenes during this tough period the last few months!”

Reinardt Janse van Rensburg finished second twice previously at the championships

Janse van Rensburg previously won in 2017 and finished second in 2012 and 2016 and third in 2015.

In the men’s elite national time trial last Friday, Byron Munton emerged as the winner ahead of Kent Main with Brandon Downes taking the bottom step on the podium.

The race over 30km saw Munton post a winning time of 43:40.73 with Main stopping the clock less than nine seconds slower in 43:49.51.

Downes was another 15 seconds back in 44:04.69.

In the women’s elite national road race over 107km it was Under-23 star Frances Janse van Rensburg who was crowned champion with Hayley Preen in second and Carla Oberholzer in third.

Meanwhile, in the women’s elite time trial, Oberholzer finished the 20km course in 30:49 with Zanri Rossouw 17 seconds back in 31:06 and Dunette Shaw third in 33:05.
