SA Fashion Week: Gert Johan Coetzee closes day one
One of South Africa’s most beloved and talented designers, Gert Johan Coetzee closed the first night off SA Fashion Week with his London Fashion Week collection on Thursday 26 September, where The South African was present.
GERT JOHAN COETZEE CLOSES FIRST NIGHT OF SA FASHION WEEK
SA Fashion Week kicked off on Thursday 26 September at Melrose Arch in Gauteng with four shows. The first show, which started at 19:00 sharp, saw collections from Thabo Makhetha and Fikile Sokhulu.
After a little break, it was time for the next show, which showcased designs from three different designers – Artho Eksteen, Michael Ludwig Studio and Pret-a-Perfect. This was followed by Erre, Ephymol and The Bam Collective. Then, it was time for the fourth and final show, which saw Gert Johan Coetzee close the show with his London Fashion Week collection.
The collection was inspired by South Africa’s landscapes, cultures, and resilient people, each piece blends traditional elements with contemporary design, creating a visual narrative that honors the past while embracing the future.
THE UNION BUILDINGS AS INSPIRATION
As per a press release, The Union Buildings represent unity, democracy and more.

Completed in 1913, these buildings have witnessed some of the most pivotal moments in our nation’s history. From the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as the first democratically elected President of South Africa to countless celebrations of our nation’s resilience, the Union Buildings are more than just a landmark—they are a beacon of hope and progress,” according to the press release.
“This collection draws deeply from the essence of South Africa, reflecting its vibrant cultures and resilient spirit. The Union Buildings, with their panoramic views and elegant architecture, provide the perfect setting for this collection, mirroring the themes of empowerment, unity, and the celebration of our shared heritage,” as per the press release.
