Rulani Mokwena reveals his mandate for next season: List of trophies the club needs to win

The pressure is on Rulani Mokwena to secure more trophies for Mamelodi Sundowns next season.

The 37-year-old was named DStv Premiership coach of the season on Sunday during the Premier Soccer League(PSL) awards. Having guided Masandawana to their seventh straight title, Mokwena broke several records that season. After going unbeaten in 29 matches, Downs suffered their first loss of the season against Cape Town City on the last day of the season.

Aside from the league, Mamelodi Sundowns and Rulani Mokwena have failed to win more trophies. The team reached two domestic cup finals but lost both to rivals Orlando Pirates. In the CAF Champions League, Masandawana once again fell short losing to Esperance in the sem-final.

Speaking to Power FM 98.7, Mokwena outlined his mandate for next season.

“Better than this season. It has to be better than this season,” Mokwena said when asked about next season.

Rulani Mokwena wants more trophies with Sundowns

“Better than this season means MTN8. We were in the final and lost on penalties. It means winning the MTN8.

“The league title means surpassing the number of points that we have accumulated and winning it again.”

Rulani has often been criticised for failing to win the Champions League despite winning domestic trophies regularly. The former Orlando Pirates coach said his goal is to win more domestic cups and also the CAF CL.

“The Champions League. We want to win the Champions League but I say to you, and I’m very realistic in that sense that next season for me, we need to be in the final. We must be in the final.

“We had to show progress and to show that we’ve developed and improved, and we must be in the final of the Champions League and give ourselves a chance to win the Champions League,” he said as per iDiski Times.

Here are some of the trophies Rulani Mokwena will be aiming to win:
