Rukungiri Man Hangs Self in Police Cell
A 30-year-old man in Rukungiri was on Monday hanged himself in a police cell after being arrested over domestic violence.
Elly Maate the Kigezi regional Police spokesman identifies the deceased as Didas Mugarura, a resident of Kinyamahwa village in Nyakagyeme sub county.
The deceased, Maate says, had been picked up for a domestic fight with his wife Anita Ainembabazi, who reported the matter to Kebisoni police station.
Mrs Ainembabazi told police that because of abuse, she had left her husband two months ago and went back to her family, only for him to show up on Saturday demanding that she returns home.
When she declined, she says, the deceased pounced on her and started beating her.
According to Maate, on Sunday evening at around 7pm, Mugarura was arrested from Kebisoni town and brought in for questioning.
However, early in the night, police officer Pius Muyambi went to check on him in custody and found him hanging dead in the cell.
“He used his shirt to commit suicide,” Maate said.
“The scene was visited by the DPC, OC CID, and the Grade One Magistrate before the body was taken for postmortem done, and handed to the relatives for burial.”
