Rubirizi: UPDF Shooter Finally Arrested

A Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) soldier attached to the 27 Battalion in Rubirizi District who on Sunday night went on rampage and shot three people dead has been arrested.

The suspect, Godson Amutahaire carried out the attack in Nkondo village, Ryeru sub county at 1:00am on Monday 28th December 2020.

Police says Amutahaire picked his gun in the dead of the night and started firing bullets in the air and also attacked people’s homes in three villages and shot three women dead.

The dead include; Scovia Timbakizire 42 years, Muwanda one Conrad, 22, and his sister Olivia Ninsiima.

Three other people escaped with gunshot injuries and they include Maurine Kyakusimire, Shirani Ahimbisibwe, and Rauman Maweje, all members of the same family.

These are admitted at KIU and Mbarara hospitals.

SP Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson says that Amutahire was arrested last evening, but that he had not yet spoken out on why he carried out the attack

Martial added that the suspect will be tried in court martial to answer to charges.

The case is registered at Rubirizi police station as CRB 629/2020 and the gun which was used was also recovered, according to SP Martial.
