RIP: Orlando Pirates, Callies legend Lucas Moripe passes away

Orlando Pirates and Pretoria Callies legend Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe has sadly passed away.

According to a report by Sunday World, Moripe passed away at his home on Tuesday night.

Moripe, a respected midfield maestro during his playing days, began his football career in 1971 with Callies.

He then went on to play for Pirates in 1981 before injuries forced him into retiring from the beautiful game.

In his honour whilst still alive, a street in Atteridgeville was named after Moripe, and this was followed by the renaming of the Atteridgeville Super Stadium in 2010.

To date, the venue, often used by Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United, is known as the Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium.

The news of Moripe’s passing was confirmed by the South African Masters & Legends Football Association president and Safa NEC member Jacob “Buddha” Mathathe.

“The iconic and legendary Mecro “Masterpieces” Moripe has gone home to be with the Lord. We pass our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and relatives,” said Mathathe to the publication.

“We supplicate to God to give the family strength, courage, grace and comfort. May his wonderful, beautiful and legendary soul repose peacefully.

“Instead of finding ways to mitigate the socio-economic challenges facing former professional football players, who have contributed immensely to the development of football in this country and who most of us are benefiting from their toil.

“We want to silence those that raise their issues…ALUTA CONTINUA….the struggle continue,” he added.

The South African website would like to convey its condolences to the family and friends of ‘Modimo wa bolo.
