It was reported yesterday that Mamelodi Sundowns had stolen a march on Kaizer Chiefs by opening transfer talks with Stellenbosch FC for Junior Mendieta.
Mendieta has been a top target for Chiefs for a while now with Sundowns joining the race and seemingly surpassing their rivals for his signature.
It was recently reported that Sundowns are preparing to part ways with midfielder Haashim Domingo, having failed to agree terms with him on a new deal. Now, moving as swiftly and purposefully as they are known to, the Brazilians went straight to Stellenbosch to gauge the possibility of a deal for their key man.
Chiefs were credited with the early interest in Mendieta, in fact they’re thought to be two years into their interest in the Argentine star. Club sporting director Kaizer Motaung Junior has also come out publicly to confirm the club’s interest in the player saying: “ Of course Mendieta is down to Stellenbosch’s strategic outlook for him. We know he is contracted and I think as time goes on we will see who where we are. He is a top talent. We would like to have him, we would like to have (Khanyisa Mayo) all these are great players. Our supporters mentioning their names, shows they understand the game, but the coach and his staff will give us an indication of their requirements, we don’t sign the players and present them to the coach, the coaches will guide us on this one” to Radio200.
R10 million release clause for Mendieta
Now part of yesterday’s report claimed that Sundowns are now ready to make a bid that will officially put them in the driving seat to sign Mendieta from Stellenbosch, beating Chiefs in the process. It has also since been revealed by iDiski Times that the players release clause is in fact R10 million, not the earlier reported R12 million.
It now remains to be seen if Sundowns’ recent acceleration of the process to sign Mendieta will spell the end for Chiefs in the race, or give them a wake up call to compete for his signature.
