Rassie Erasmus provides update following sudden surgery
South African icon Rassie Erasmus underwent sudden shoulder surgery days after concluding the Springboks Autumn series.
The 52-year-old seems to be in (somewhat) good spirits following the operation, saying, “I’m having a shoulder operation here, I’m not going to show the pictures because I don’t think it’s worth showing. All OK, I think I will be out of the hospital by the weekend.”
He then diverted his attention to his mighty Boks, saying, “I wanted to thank the fans for the amazing support this year. Even when we tried some things and things weren’t going well, you were always standing behind us.”
Springboks reign supreme
A clean sweep in the Autumn series made it eleven wins in thirteen games for Rassie Erasmus and his men in 2024 – ending the year with a remarkable 85% win percentage.
Days after dismantling Wales 45-12, he watched, from his hospital bed, several Springboks pick up accolades at the World Rugby Awards ceremony.
Pieter-Steph du Toit won player of the year while Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx, Eben Etzebeth, Damian de Allende, Jesse Kriel, and Cheslin Kolbe, joined him on the World Rugby Dream XV – Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu narrowly missed out on becoming Breakthrough Player of the Year.
“To our players who made it into the Dream XV and Sacha nominated and almost got it there, we are all proud of those guys,” Rassie Erasmus wished.
Rassie Erasmus ends on a good note
“I hope you have a great time over the festive season. Fortunately, we have the URC now and some of the boys are playing, to all the fans I hope you have good holidays.
“Let’s stay nice and humble, support each other and help us keep our feet on the ground. We play for you guys and for South Africa, also for those abroad who understand and see what we stand for as the Springboks – I appreciate that a lot.
“At the end of the day, it is all just a game that we are all proud of. Merry Christmas and hope you all have a lekker festive time. I will probably only hop on Twitter next (year) again. Cheers.”
