Rassie Erasmus health update shared: Is he gonna be okay?
Rassie Erasmus health update shared, as he reflects on a great season.
In an unexpected turn, Springboks head coach Erasmus has confirmed that he’s currently recovering in the hospital after undergoing shoulder surgery. This comes just after the South African team made history by completing a flawless northern tour, defeating Scotland, England, and Wales. It marks the first time since 2013 that the Springboks have finished November unbeaten.
Erasmus confirms shoulder surgery in a post
Erasmus shared the news of his operation through a social media post on X, expressing gratitude to fans for their unwavering support throughout a successful year. The head coach made it clear that although he was “under the knife” this week, he expects to be out of the hospital by the weekend.
In the post, Erasmus said:
“I wanted to thank the fans for the amazing support this year. Even when we tried some things and things weren’t going well, you were always standing behind us.”
Although the procedure was critical, he reassured everyone, saying:
“I’m having a shoulder operation here, I’m not going to show the pictures because I don’t think it’s worth showing. All OK, I think I will be out of the hospital by the weekend.”
Erasmus reflects on the Springboks’ stellar year
Despite his health setback, Erasmus took the opportunity to celebrate the Springboks’ remarkable achievements this year. In particular, he praised Pieter-Steph du Toit for winning the prestigious World Rugby Player of the Year Award. Erasmus also congratulated the six other players who were named to the World Rugby Dream XV, including Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx, Eben Etzebeth, Damian de Allende, Jesse Kriel, and Cheslin Kolbe.
He didn’t forget to highlight Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who narrowly missed out on the Breakthrough Player of the Year Award to Wallace Sititi from the All Blacks. Erasmus shared:
“To our players who made it into the Dream XV and Sacha nominated and almost got it there, we are all proud of those guys.”
Merry Christmas from Rassie
As the festive season approaches, Erasmus reminded fans of the importance of staying humble and supporting one another, both within the team and across South Africa. He urged:
“I hope you have a great time over the festive season. Fortunately, we have the URC now and some of the boys are playing, to all the fans I hope you have good holidays.”
He added a heartfelt message for South Africans and the global Springboks community:
“Let’s stay nice and humble, support each other and help us keep our feet on the ground. We play for you guys and for South Africa, also for those abroad who understand and see what we stand for as the Springboks – I appreciate that a lot.”
Concluding his message with gratitude and well-wishes, he shared:
“At the end of the day, it is all just a game that we are all proud of. Merry Christmas and hope you all have a lekker festive time. I will probably only hop on Twitter next (year) again. Cheers.”
As Rassie Erasmus recovers, the Springboks can look back on an unforgettable year, one filled with triumphs, challenges, and outstanding individual performances. With Erasmus’ recovery underway, the team’s focus remains on continuing to represent South Africa with pride and humility.
