Police Probe Security Breach at D. Speaker Thomas Tayebwa’s Home

Uganda’s Parliamentary Police reinforced by Criminal Investigations Department (CID) are investigating circumstances under which an intruder accessed the stately home of Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa.

Tayebwa’s home was guarded by Parliamentary Police when the incident occured on Thursday  night.

Parliament spokesperson Chris Obore dismissed the report as a ‘rumor.’

Contacted for comment, Tayebwa’s press secretary Alex Esagala said he would revert to us in an hour.

He later told us to check Tayebwa’s official Twitter handle where this message was posted: “Ignore social media rumors of security breach at my home. Government deploys sufficient security detail for my home. The officers are reshuffled periodically by their command. I would be the first to complain if there was any breach, therefore, ignore the unfounded rumors.”

Tayebwa’s telephone number was switched off on Sunday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said he was not aware of any incident at Tayebwa’s home.

What really happened?

However, ChimpReports has reliably established that Tayebwa recently entered his new house in Kigo on the shores of Lake Victoria.

The Deputy Speaker has been furnishing the house – with several workers and service providers accessing it.

On Thursday night, Tayebwa’s family members woke up to find that some of their property was missing.

On checking the CCTV cameras, it was realized that an intruder had leapt over the fence and accessed the house through the window.

The Police guards were reportedly sleeping on duty.

“There was no violence. It was an intruder who sneaked into the house and left without being noticed,” said a source who preferred anonymity to speak freely.

The Police guards were immediately withdrawn and questioned about the incident.

“It is standard police procedure to withdraw guards on duty in case of such an incident at the residence of a high profile person,” said a source.

“What Police did was to reinforce security at the home of Tayebwa. You can’t just maintain the status quo.”

The source further said Tayebwa formally informed police which went to his home for a crime scene analysis.

“As of now, this still is a police investigation. The intruder hasn’t been arrested yet.”

The incident has heightened fears in the corridors of power.

Tayebwa recently slammed the the ruling NRM’s old guard, saying they were undermining youthful leaders occupying top offices.

However, officials said law enforcement agencies would have to first arrest the suspect before determining the motive.

Speaker Anita Among recently claimed that unknown persons were trailing her motorcade and that she feared her life was in danger.

The break-in also comes at a time when the city is awash in crises over crime with burglaries being reported in wealthy neighborhoods.
