PM Nabbanja Flags Off Distribution Of Karamoja Iron Sheets

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has flagged the distribution exercise of iron sheets meant for Karamoja sub-region with the first consignment sent off on Wednesday, November 29, 2023.

Nabbanja flagged off the distribution at the prime minister’s stores in Namanve. A total of 3,752 people, with priority being given to the Karachunas (reformed Karimojong warriors), will benefit from the 97,552 pieces of iron sheets.

The Prime Minister said the Government did not buy new iron sheets and that all the pieces that will be distributed are from the store. She said media reported that the stores were empty, which wasn’t true.

“You all know the crisis that has been happening with the Karamoja Iron sheets, but you will agree with, as you have seen, the store is full of iron sheets. We didn’t buy new ones. They (media) showed that the stores were empty,” she said.

Nabbanja also noted that tons of food in the store have gone as a result of the closure of the store during the investigation of the Karamoja Iron-Sheets-Scandal. She said, she will update the cabinet so that a solution is found.

“We have lost food due to the investigation because security closed all the stores and food was inaccessible. We have now lost tons of food. I will take the report to the cabinet, we see what we can do,” she said.

The state minister for Karamoja affairs, Hon Agnes Nandutu, said she was happy that the distribution exercise has started and applauded Nabbanja for her efforts in ensuring that the exercise begins.

“I am one of the people who are happy that we are doing this project and delivering the iron sheets to the people of Karamoja. We want to thank you (Nabbanja) for the efforts you have taken to ensure that we reach this point,” she said.

The Chairperson of the Karamoja Parliamentary Group, Achia Remigo, said people, especially the Karachunas, have been asking them when the iron sheets will be delivered, saying that they will now be happy to receive them.

“Those beneficiaries in the region have been waiting for these iron sheets, and especially the young men who have been giving out their guns. They have been asking us; Are you not lying to us that you are going to give us iron sheets? But today they will be happy to see that the iron sheets have been delivered by the President to them,” he said.

Remigo recommended that the distribution starts with those who have given out their guns to the authorities, and then other beneficiaries can follow.

Guidelines

PM Nabbanja said each beneficiary will receive 26 pieces of iron sheets; 20 for the home, 4 for the kitchen and two for the toilet.

The iron sheets will be distributed from the district headquarters and each beneficiary is required to sign an acknowledgement form, after they have received their iron sheets, for purposes of accountability. District Committees will use the same forms they earlier submitted to the Office of the Prime Minister during the distribution exercise.
