Players need to understand how honourable it is to play for Ghana – Elvis Afriyie Ankrah

Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has emphasized the need to mentally prepare Black Stars players to appreciate the privilege of representing Ghana at the senior national level. His remarks come in the wake of Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) the first time in two decades. The Black Stars finished at the bottom of Group F with just three points from six matches, marking a disappointing end to their campaign. In an interview with Channel One TV, Mr Afriyie Ankrah stressed the collective responsibility of all stakeholders. The FA has a role to play, the team has a role to play, and the technical bench has a role to play, he noted.Regarding the players, he highlighted the importance of instilling a sense of pride and commitment. We must get them to understand that being called up to play for the national team is an honour. They should be ready to give their all, even for little or no financial reward. That said, it doesnt mean we shouldnt reward them, he explained.Following the teams inability to secure a spot in the continental tournament, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council is expected to announce a decision on the future of head coach Otto Addo.Looking ahead, the Black Stars will shift their focus to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, beginning with matches against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025.
