PICS AND VIDEO | ‘Hailing sideways’: Strong winds, hail as Eastern Cape storm continues

The severe thunderstorms in the Eastern Cape, which started last week, are still raging. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued another Level 4 weather warning on Monday, 13 December.

EASTERN CAPE STORMS CONTINUE

The thunderstorms in the Eastern Cape have led to the deaths of at least six people and left 19 others injured as of Monday.

Eskom has been battling to restore electricity, as well. On Friday, 10 December, the power utility said 49 000 customers were affected by the damage caused to electrical infrastructure by the storm on Thursday. The difficult weather conditions also impacted repair times.

The weather service said the Thunderstorm warning would last until 23:59 on Monday. It said the inclement weather was caused by a deep surface trough sitting over the interior of the country and an upper air trough over the western parts of South Africa.

The troughs cause “very high instabilities” that may lead to severe thunderstorm development over the Eastern Cape.

“These storms could contain large amount of small hail, heavy downpours, excessive lightning and strong damaging winds,” said the weather service.

A video from Alice in the Eastern Cape surfaced on social media and shows how the strong winds are propelling the hail horizontally, as predicted by the SAWS.

Other potential impacts include damage to infrastructure; disruptions to services; heavy downpours that could cause flooding and falling and flying debris because of the strong winds.
