Ulrika Lindberg Labasauskas, a Swedish diplomat in Uganda, has died in a road accident along Jinja-Iganga highway in the eastern part of the country, Chimp Corps report.

Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) said the accident happened at Magamaga weighbridge.

“The diplomat attached to the Swedish Embassy died on the spot,” URCS spokesperson Irene Nakasiita confirmed.

“At least three other people were rushed  to Jinja hospital for further management,” she added.

Police officials said they were making assessments before providing a detailed statement on the cause of the accident.

However, photos released by the Red Cross show first responders picking Lindberg’s body from a diplomatic car, a Toyota Prado, registration number, CD0615U.

The Prado car appears to have collided with the Fuse brand truck

The prado, in which Lindberg was traveling in, appears to have collided with a Fuso brand truck along the highway.

The incident comes hardly a week after Sadurni Carrasco Sumaya, 33,  a female Spanish journalist working with Agence France-Presse (AFP), a leading global news agency, died in a road accident with her driver in  Kiryandongo district, north western Uganda.

Lindberg was serving as a counsellor at the Swedish embassy in Kampala. Her identity card, registration number, D376315,  was issued on December 21, 2021.

She was a new officer working on the portfolio for Democracy, Human Rights and Gender at the Embassy.

The deceased previously worked with Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency – Sida in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm.

The Red Cross covered Lindberg’s head with a black cloth before wrapping her body in a bag.

“Our response team has  handed the body to police and they are probably taking it to Jinja main hospital Mortuary,” said Nakasiita.

In Uganda, road accidents have increased steadily in recent years.

According to government statistics, a total of 3,633 people were killed in road accidents in Uganda in 2020.

The figure is an increase from the ones posted in 2018 and 2019 when at least 3,194 and 3,407 people, respectively, were killed in road accidents

Fatal road crashes are frequent in Uganda and are often the result of negligent law enforcement, poorly serviced vehicles and potholed roads.
