On behalf of CAF and on his own behalf, Motsepe extended his deepest condolences toMoripe’s family, the South African Football Federation (SAFA) and the entire South African football community.

May the soul of Lucas Moripe rest in eternal peace.

Midfield maestro

As reported by The South African website, Moripe, a respected midfield maestro during his playing days, began his football career in 1971 with Pretoria Callies.

He then went on to play for Orlando Pirates in 1981 before injuries forced him into retiring from the beautiful game.

In his honour whilst still alive, a street in Atteridgeville was named after Moripe, and this was followed by the renaming of the Atteridgeville Super Stadium in 2010.

To date, the venue, often used by Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United, is known as the Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium.
