Parliament Pays Tribute to Hajjat Rehema Wetongola

Parliament has on Thursday convened a special sitting to pay tribute to the departed Kamuli Municipality Member of Parliament, Hajjat Rehema Wetongola.

The motion to pay tribute was customarily moved by the Prime Minister, Ruhakana Rugunda and seconded by the Commissioner, Francis Mwijukye, who represented the Leader of Opposition.

Rugunda described Watongola as a good cadre of the ruling National Resistance Movement party since 1997 and she wholeheartedly worked for her people.

“Honorable was a great NRM cadre who placed her voters above self, by fronting the wellbeing of her voters. She was reliable, religious, dependable, respectable and committed servant of the country,” said Rugunda.

Watongola’s political career started in 1997 as Councillor of Kamuli district, a position she held up to 2011, until she came to Parliament in 2016.

Rugunda, who is also the leader of government business in Parliament, noted that Wetongola’s demise was unfortunate and should open the eyes of the public on the danger of COVID-19 pandemic. Wetongola has become the second MP to die of COVID-19 after Pallisa woman MP Faith Alupo.

Wetongola was hospitalized in Mulago National Referral Hospital until November 14, 2020 when she was declared dead. According to reports, the late first underwent self medication before booking herself to a local clinic. She was later taken to Mulago in a critical condition.

The opposition representative, Mwijukye described the late Wetongola as a resourceful legislator.

“It is so sad to lose a resourceful person. It happened at a time when we are registering surge in community cases and let me appeal to citizens to take precautions and keep safe,” said Mwijukye.

Former Works Minister and Katikamu North MP, Abaraham Byandala blamed government for allegedly not distributing masks to all citizens to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
