Tatjana Smith goes out on a high
Now South Africa’s most decorated Olympian, Tatjana Smith has called time on her illustrious swimming career. She won gold in the 100m breaststroke event in Paris and silver in the 200m, a reversal of her antics in Tokyo three years ago. 27-year-old Smith couldn’t quite match the exploits of Penny Heyns in 1996 who won gold in both events, but her tally of four medals at the games puts her out in front of any other South African. Heyns made history at Atlanta in 1996, winning the 100m and 200m events. Also, she was the youngest member of Team SA at Barcelona 1992. For Smith, it’s been quite a journey since she missed qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in the 200m breaststroke by 0.01 seconds (one-hundredth of a second). She retires a legend of SA swimming.
