Our defenders made silly mistakes – Dan Quaye analyses Ghana’s defeat to Sudan

Dan QuayeFormer Black Stars defender Dan Quaye has pointed to Ghana’s defensive frailties as the key factor in the team’s 2-0 defeat to Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The loss, on Tuesday afternoon, has left the Black Stars hopes of qualifying for the continental tournament hanging by a thread.Sudan, led by former Ghana coach James Kwesi Appiah, capitalised on Ghanas defensive lapses to secure a vital win. This defeat now leaves Ghana at serious risk of missing out on the AFCON for the first time in 20 years, with only two matches remaining against Angola and Niger. In his analysis of the game, Quaye did not hold back his disappointment. “Our defenders were poor, and we made silly mistakes,” he said. “Its very disappointing because we cant afford to miss out on AFCON in this group. The Sudanese played like they were Ghana.”He further criticised the attitude and discipline of the current Black Stars squad. “The truth is, this group of players is indisciplined. If they are not ready to play for the national team, they should decline call-ups instead of playing poorly and breaking the hearts of millions of Ghanaians,” he added. With two crucial games remaining, Ghana faces a tough road ahead in their bid to secure AFCON qualification, needing wins against already-qualified Angola and Niger while hoping for favorable results elsewhere.
