Osei-Fosu commends Kwesi Appiah for Sudanâs 2025 AFCON qualification and tactical mastery
Ignatius Osei-Fosu and Kwesi AppiahSudan assistant coach Ignatius Osei-Fosu has praised head coach Kwesi Appiah for his role in guiding Sudan to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.Sudan secured qualification from Group F, finishing ahead of Ghana and Niger, with Angola also progressing.Appiah, who once coached Ghana, had the opportunity to face his former team during the qualifiers.Appiahs Sudan frustrated Ghana in the two meetings, securing a draw in Accra and beating the Black Stars 2-0 in Libya to qualify.Osei-Fosu said that Appiah was the mastermind behind Sudans strategy and decisions on the field.”I have a defensive mindset, so if care isnt taken, youd assume I managed the team. But I had nothing to do with our matches. It was Kwasi who decided where each player should play, and thats why I say hes the brain and heart of the team. The people know that amid the civil war, the one thing that can bring them joy is football,” he said.Osei-Fosu also highlighted Appiahs humility, particularly after a heavy 4-0 loss to Niger.”Not many coaches would admit their mistakes, but Kwesi was honest, saying, We were arrogant during the game,” Osei-Fosu shared.Appiah was appointed Sudans head coach in September 2023 and has quickly led the team to their first AFCON appearance since 2013.Sudan are also in a strong position to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, currently leading their CAF qualifying group with 10 points.
